Both grow without soil and both recirculate water — but aeroponics and hydroponics differ in yield, water use, complexity and cost. Here's how to choose for a commercial farm.
Hydroponics grows plants with their roots sitting in a nutrient solution or a wet inert medium. Aeroponics suspends the roots in air and feeds them with a fine, high-pressure nutrient mist. No soil, in either case.
Because aeroponic roots are surrounded by air, they get far more oxygen than roots submerged in water. More oxygen at the root drives faster growth and, typically, higher yield per square metre. Ultrasonic and high-pressure aeroponic systems have reported yield uplifts of around 20% versus hydroponics for the same crops.
Hydroponics is still highly productive and very consistent — it's the workhorse of commercial leafy-green production — but for the highest yield density, aeroponics leads.
Both methods recirculate their nutrient solution, so both use dramatically less water than field farming — on the order of 95% less. Aeroponics tends to use the least of all, because misting delivers water precisely to the root and little is lost. In water-scarce regions like the Gulf, that efficiency is decisive.
Hydroponics is generally simpler and cheaper to run: fewer high-pressure components, and a buffer of standing solution that tolerates a short interruption. Aeroponics is more sensitive — roots suspended in air can dry out quickly if misting or power stops — so it demands better automation and, for remote sites, power redundancy.
That extra engineering is why aeroponics suits higher-value crops and operators who want maximum yield and water efficiency, while hydroponics suits simpler, high-volume leafy production.
There's no single winner — it depends on crop, climate and goals. For the highest yield per m², lowest water use and high-value or functional crops, aeroponics wins.
